Appendix 4.1.C: Rationale for Removal of “By Proxy” Membership

The previously included “By Proxy” clause has been removed to preserve doctrinal clarity and ecclesiological integrity. The term “By Proxy” lacked definition and opened the door to misunderstandings inconsistent with the biblical and Baptist understanding of church membership.

Scripture shows that church membership involves personal belief and participation—such as public confession of faith (Romans 10:9–10), believer’s baptism (Acts 2:41), and voluntary uniting with the local body (Acts 2:42). These acts require the individual’s direct engagement, not representation by another party.

Moreover, the Southern Baptist Convention does not recognize or practice proxy membership or voting, emphasizing the importance of personal accountability in all church matters. Retaining ambiguous terminology such as “By Proxy” could lead to confusion, especially in light of practices in other faith traditions that do not align with sound doctrine (e.g., baptism for the dead).

Should the church desire to accommodate those unable to be physically present due to hardship (e.g., illness or military deployment), such cases should be handled under a new, well-defined category titled “Special Circumstances,” clearly grounded in Scripture and addressed on a case-by-case basis.
