This study guide is provided from the sermon outline for personal Bible study and reflection.
The live broadcast audio was not captured due to a technical issue, but the substance of the message is preserved here to help you follow the truth preached from Ruth 2:9.
Ruth 2:9
Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou after them:
have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art athirst,
go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn.
Theme: God does not open a field so His people can live empty at the edge of it.
He gives promise so faith will move, lay hold, and gather.
1Fixed Focus
Ruth was first told where to look before she was told where to go. Boaz said,
“Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap.” Focus came before pursuit.
The believer must learn to keep his eyes on Christ, on the Word of God, and on the place where God is working.
Wrong focus will drain faith. Scattered vision weakens pursuit. What fills your eyes will often guide your steps.
Supporting Scriptures
- Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith...
- Colossians 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Study Questions
- What has your attention right now?
- Are your eyes fixed on the field God has opened, or are they distracted by fear, delay, or comparison?
- How would your next step change if your focus were fully set on the Lord?
2Faithful Follow
Boaz did not only tell Ruth to look. He told her, “go thou after them.”
Promise is not permission to sit still. Promise is a summons to pursue.
There comes a point where faith must stop admiring what God said and start moving on it.
Faith does not only agree with the promise. Faith advances. It follows after what God has placed before it.
Supporting Scriptures
- Joshua 1:3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you...
- Deuteronomy 1:8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land...
- 1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life...
- Philippians 3:12 ...I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
Study Questions
- What has God already placed before you that you have not yet acted upon?
- Are you waiting for more permission when God has already given you direction?
- What would it look like for you to “go after” what God has opened?
3Fullness Furnished
Boaz joined pursuit, protection, and provision together. Ruth was told to go after the reapers, but she was also assured that she would be protected and that water had been provided for her thirst.
If God said go, there will be grace for the going. God does not send His people forward empty.
The field contains what obedience will require. The God who commands the step also prepares the strength.
Supporting Scriptures
- Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
- 2 Peter 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness...
- Psalm 84:11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory...
Study Questions
- Where do you need to trust that God has already prepared provision for obedience?
- What fear is keeping you at the edge of the field?
- How has God furnished strength, protection, or supply in past seasons of obedience?
Closing Thought
Fix your eyes. Follow in faith. Feed on His fullness.
Do not stand at the edge of God’s provision talking about what He can do.
Step into what He has said. Move on what He has opened. Gather what He has allowed.
There is a field before you. There is a word over you. There is provision for you.
