The Church at Pergamum: Faithful, Yet Compromised
Revelation 2:12–17 | The Church in Pergamum
A follow-along outline to help stay on track during the lesson.
Introduction
Christ Speaks With Authority
Revelation 2:12
And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;
Pergamum was not an easy place for a church to stand. Jesus introduces Himself as the One with the sharp sword with two edges.
- The issue in Pergamum was pressure from the outside and compromise tolerated on the inside.
- Before Christ corrects the church, He reminds the church that He speaks with divine authority.
Opening Thought: The same Christ who walks among the churches also speaks to the churches.
Point 1
A Difficult Location — Where Satan’s Seat Is
Revelation 2:13
I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.
Christ knew their service, their surroundings, and the spiritual darkness pressing against them.
- Christ says, I know thy works. He knows their service.
- Christ says, where thou dwellest. He knows their surroundings.
- Christ says, where Satan's seat is. He knows the darkness around them.
Key Thought: God knows where His people live, what they face, and how heavy the pressure is.
Point 2
Faithfulness Under Pressure
Revelation 2:13
I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.
This church had real commendation from Christ. They held fast His name and did not deny the faith.
- They held fast to Christ’s name when it was costly.
- They did not deny the faith, even when Antipas was slain.
- Christ remembers faithful servants that history may forget.
Key Thought: Faithfulness is often revealed when pressure rises and the cost becomes visible.
Point 3
Dangerous Compromise Inside the Church
Revelation 2:14
But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
Revelation 2:15
So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate.
Christ does not say they all held this doctrine. He says they had those among them who did. The issue was tolerated compromise.
- The doctrine of Balaam points to stumbling God’s people through worldliness, idolatry, and immorality.
- The doctrine of the Nicolaitanes shows that what Christ hates must never be treated lightly by His church.
- A church can stand against outside pressure while still allowing inward corruption.
Key Thought: The danger to Pergamum was not only Satan’s seat outside the church. It was Satan’s influence finding room inside the church through compromise.
Point 4
The Call — Repent or Face the Sword
Revelation 2:16
Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
The command is simple: repent. The warning is urgent: I will come unto thee quickly. The instrument is serious: the sword of my mouth.
- Christ loves His church too much to leave compromise unchallenged.
- Repentance is mercy before judgment.
- Deal with sin while it is still called “today.”
Key Thought: When Christ says, “Repent,” He is giving space to turn before He brings correction.
Closing
The Promise to the Overcomer
Revelation 2:17
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
The warning is serious, but the passage ends with invitation and promise.
- Hidden manna points to satisfaction and nourishment that comes from God.
- A white stone speaks of acceptance, victory, or favorable judgment from the Lord.
- A new name reminds the believer of personal identity and intimate reward from Christ.
Closing Application: Are you living in a hard place? Stay faithful. Are you standing under pressure? Hold fast. Are you tolerating compromise? Repent. Are you listening? Hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
