Faithful Unto Death
A follow-along outline to help stay on track during the lesson.
And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
- The first and the last — their trouble is not outside His rule.
- Which was dead, and is alive — their fear of death must bow to His victory over it.
The Condition
I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
- They were poor materially.
- They were rich spiritually.
- Their opposition had a religious face, but a darker source.
The Command
Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer...
- Suffering is expected.
- Fear is not permitted.
- Courage grows from knowing who is speaking.
The Conflict
...behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried...
- The devil is behind the attack.
- The trial is a testing.
- What looks like attack is still under God’s eye.
The Constraint
...and ye shall have tribulation ten days...
- The trial is real.
- The trial is limited.
- The duration is still governed by God.
The Charge
...be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
- The crown is reward, not the purchase price of justification.
- Christ gives grace for the faithfulness He commands.
- We are not rewarded with salvation because of endurance.
The Call
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
- The overcomer is not the man who saves himself by grit.
- The overcomer is the one who belongs to Christ and overcomes through Him.
- The faithful in Christ will never be hurt of the second death.
