Faithful Unto Death

Revelation 2:8–11 | The Church in Smyrna

A follow-along outline to help stay on track during the lesson.

Revelation 2:8
And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
Christ introduces Himself to this suffering church in a way fitted to their need.
  • The first and the last — their trouble is not outside His rule.
  • Which was dead, and is alive — their fear of death must bow to His victory over it.
The One speaking to a suffering church is the risen Lord, and that changes how the church must hear the rest of the passage.

The Condition

Revelation 2:9
I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
Christ sees their works, their tribulation, their poverty, and their opposition.
  • They were poor materially.
  • They were rich spiritually.
  • Their opposition had a religious face, but a darker source.
Heaven’s definition of wealth is not earthly comfort, but riches in Christ and riches in faith.

The Command

Revelation 2:10a
Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer...
Christ does not deny the reality of pain. He forbids fear in the middle of it.
  • Suffering is expected.
  • Fear is not permitted.
  • Courage grows from knowing who is speaking.
The church may not control its suffering, but it is not to be ruled by fear.

The Conflict

Revelation 2:10b
...behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried...
The source of the hostility is spiritual, but God still overrules the trial for His own purposes.
  • The devil is behind the attack.
  • The trial is a testing.
  • What looks like attack is still under God’s eye.
The fire is real, but it is never outside the knowledge and sovereignty of God.

The Constraint

Revelation 2:10c
...and ye shall have tribulation ten days...
This is not endless suffering, but measured suffering.
  • The trial is real.
  • The trial is limited.
  • The duration is still governed by God.
Whatever the exact force of “ten days,” the clear truth is that God sets the boundaries of the trial.

The Charge

Revelation 2:10d
...be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
This is not salvation by endurance. Endurance is the fruit of God’s saving and sanctifying work in His people.
  • The crown is reward, not the purchase price of justification.
  • Christ gives grace for the faithfulness He commands.
  • We are not rewarded with salvation because of endurance.
We are granted endurance because of the Christ who has saved us and keeps us.

The Call

Revelation 2:11
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
This message is for all the churches, and the promise belongs to those who are Christ’s.
  • The overcomer is not the man who saves himself by grit.
  • The overcomer is the one who belongs to Christ and overcomes through Him.
  • The faithful in Christ will never be hurt of the second death.
Fear not. Stand firm. Be faithful. The Christ who was dead and is alive is the Christ who keeps His people.

Questions and Answers

Quick sermon takeaways from Revelation 2:8-11, focused on suffering, spiritual riches, faithful endurance, the crown of life, and Christ’s promise to His people.

What is the main message of Revelation 2:8-11 in the sermon Faithful Unto Death?

The main message is that Christ speaks to suffering believers as the One who conquered death and calls His church to remain faithful under trial. The sermon emphasizes that the Lord who addresses Smyrna is the First and the Last, which was dead, and is alive, so His words to afflicted saints carry both authority and comfort.

What does Jesus mean when He says the church in Smyrna was poor, but rich?

The sermon explains that Smyrna was materially poor, yet spiritually rich in Christ. Their suffering and lack did not mean they were abandoned by God. They possessed riches that this world cannot give and persecution cannot take away, including faith, grace, and the hope of the kingdom.

How should Christians respond to suffering and fear in Revelation 2:10?

The message teaches that suffering may be expected, but fear is not to rule the believer. Christ tells His people to fear none of those things which they shall suffer, and the sermon shows that believers can face affliction with courage because the Lord is present, the devil is not sovereign, and every trial remains under God’s control.

Does be thou faithful unto death mean a person earns salvation by enduring?

No. The sermon clearly states that endurance is not the cause of salvation and steadfastness is not the price of eternal life. Christ has already purchased redemption by His blood. Faithfulness under trial is presented as the fruit of God’s saving and preserving grace in those who truly belong to Him.

What are the crown of life and the second death in Revelation 2:10-11?

The crown of life is the Lord’s promised reward to His people, and the second death refers to final condemnation. The sermon closes with the comfort that those who belong to Christ may suffer in this life, but they will never be hurt of the second death. Their future is secure because the One who conquered death keeps His people.
