Ye Shall Receive Power!

Acts 1:1-11

1  The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

2  Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

3  To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

5  For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

7  And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

9  And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

10  And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

11  Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Questions and Answers

Quick sermon takeaways from Acts 1:1-11, focused on the risen Christ, the promise of the Holy Ghost, the believer’s witness, the ascension, and the promised return of Jesus.

What is the main message of Acts 1:1-11?

Acts 1:1-11 shows the risen Lord Jesus preparing His apostles for Spirit-empowered witness. The passage begins with Jesus showing Himself alive after His passion by many infallible proofs, then points forward to the coming of the Holy Ghost, the spread of the gospel, the ascension of Christ, and the promise of His return.

What does Acts 1:8 mean when it says ye shall receive power?

Acts 1:8 says, But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. The power promised here is connected to the Holy Ghost and to the believer’s calling to be a witness for Jesus Christ.

Why did Jesus tell the apostles to wait in Jerusalem?

Jesus commanded the apostles not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father. Acts 1:4 says, And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father. Before they went out as witnesses, they needed the promised baptism and power of the Holy Ghost.

What does Acts 1 teach about the ascension of Jesus Christ?

Acts 1 teaches that Jesus ascended visibly and bodily after speaking to His disciples. Acts 1:9 says, And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. The ascension reminds believers that the risen Christ is alive, exalted, and continuing His work through Spirit-empowered witnesses.

Does Acts 1 say Jesus Christ will come again?

Yes. Acts 1 closes with the promise of Christ’s return. Acts 1:11 says, Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. The same Jesus who ascended will come again.
