Questions and Answers

Quick sermon takeaways from Acts 1:12-26, focused on prayer, Scripture, unity, and seeking the Lord’s will in the making of decisions.

What does Acts 1:12-26 teach about making decisions?

Acts 1:12-26 shows the disciples facing an important decision after the ascension of Christ. Before Matthias was numbered with the apostles, the believers gathered together, continued in prayer, considered the Scriptures, and sought the Lord’s choice. This upcoming sermon, The Making of Decisions, will point listeners to a biblical pattern for making decisions with reverence, prayer, and dependence upon God.

How did the disciples seek God’s will in Acts 1?

The disciples sought God’s will by staying together in obedience, continuing in prayer, and acknowledging that the Lord knows the hearts of all men. Acts 1:24 says, And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen. Their decision was not treated carelessly. They looked to the Lord for guidance.

Why is prayer important before making a decision?

Prayer matters because believers do not see every motive, outcome, or hidden issue involved in a decision. In Acts 1, the disciples prayed because they believed the Lord knew what they did not know. This passage reminds Christians that major choices should be brought before God with humility rather than handled only by personal preference or human reasoning.

What role did Scripture have in choosing Matthias?

Peter pointed the disciples back to the written Word of God as they considered what should be done after Judas fell by transgression. Acts 1:20 says, For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take. The passage shows that godly decision making should be shaped by Scripture, not separated from it.

What can Christians learn from Matthias being chosen in Acts 1?

Matthias being numbered with the eleven apostles reminds believers that God’s work continues under God’s direction. The disciples did not ignore responsibility, but they also did not act as though the ministry belonged to them. Acts 1:26 says, And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. The passage encourages Christians to trust the Lord while faithfully taking the next step.
